IMS or IP Multimedia Subsystem has become the de facto standard for Next Generation Networks architecture. It is designed to bring the value of Internet services to both Mobile and Fixed network operators. It will help facilitate the development and offering of many advanced multimedia applications, such as VoIP, Video, Presence and Location-based applications, Multi-player Gaming, Instant Messaging, and so on.
The purpose of this tutorial session is to help the conference participants understand the basic concepts behind IMS, the architecture and applications that it espouses and discuss some of the key learning from case studies that have been developed over the last two years. In order to meet that objective, we propose that the Tutorial include the following segments:
Background & Motivation: How it started and why it was developed; Standards activities
IMS Core: Explain all the functional elements (CSCF, HSS, MGCF, ..), interfaces, standards
Service Enablement Layer: Definitions and functions of the key network elements that comprise this layer
Overall Network Architecture: Detail how all the functional elements inter-work with each other using example call flows for mobile and wireline networks
Applications: Describe the new applications that will be carried by an IMS Infrastructure using several examples. Introduce the concept of Blended Applications and Lifestyle Services
QoS: Explain the basics of the Resource and Admission Control Functions and how they apply to IMS to provide the applications with the QoS they need
Network Deployment Scenarios: Discuss alternatives such as Overlay deployment, and evolution from the PSTN
Case Studies: Summarize some of the case studies that were conducted to analyze the Business Case, Operations costs and deployment strategies
Status & Future Directions: Conclude with examples deployment strategies of some key service providers as well as the technical and operational challenges they are facing.
In addition to the presentation material, ample time will be provided for Q&A during the session.
Dr. Mohamed El-Sayed is the manager of the Advanced Network Modeling & Optimization group at Bell Labs Research, Lucent Technologies, in Holmdel, New Jersey, USA. He has over 20 years of experience in the area of Telecommunications R&D. He started his career in Bell Labs in the early eighties where he was involved in the architecture and design of X.25 packet switching systems and networks. He subsequently contributed to many areas in data communication including, TCP/IP, Satellite Communication, Virtual Private Networks, MPLS, VoIP, etc. He took on responsibilities in a variety of leadership roles in Research, Network Architecture, Systems Engineering, Network Design & Optimization as well as Network Performance.
Dr El-Sayed’s current interests include architecture and design of 3G Wireless networks, IP Multimedia Subsystem and Applications, Intelligent Optical Networks, and Next Gen Transport network based on Ethernet/VPLS/MPLS. He has consulted with many Service Providers in N. America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East helping them with a variety of questions related to network evolution, technology introduction and network design and optimization. He has published many papers in professional journals and conferences.
Dr El-Sayed holds a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio and both a B.Sc. and an M. Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Cairo University, Egypt.
