At the core of facilitating Internet service delivery is IP routing. In this tutorial, the basics of IP routing in service delivery and the role of IP addressing will be presented. Furthermore, intra and inter-domain routing protocols (such as OSPF, IS-IS, BGP), peering/tiering, IP traffic engineering, and operational issues will be covered. Finally, a discussion on emerging routing issues at the intersection of Internet, PSTN, and IMS (IP multimedia subsystem) will also be included.
Deep Medhi is Professor of Computer Networking in the Computer Science &Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), USA. He received a B.Sc.(Hons.) degree in Mathematics from Cotton College, Gauhati University, India in 1981 and an M.S. degree in Mathematics from the University of Delhi, India in 1983. He then received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA in 1985 and 1987, respectively.
Prior to joining UMKC in 1989, he was a member of the technical staff in the traffic network routing and design department at the AT&T Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, New Jersey, USA (1987-1989). He was an invited visiting professor at the Technical University of Denmark (summer 1999),
and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Lund University, Sweden (summer 2003). He's a Fulbright Senior Specialist. His research interests are in resilient network design and architecture, IP routing and network availability, dynamic quality-of-service routing, next generation network architecture, network measurements and management. He has published over seventy papers. He is co-author of the book, "Routing,
Flow, and Capacity Design in Communication and Computer Networks," published by Morgan Kaufmann Publishers (an imprint of Elsevier), July 2004. His forthcoming book "Network Routing: Algorithms, Protocols, and Architectures" will also be published by Morgan Kaufmann/Elsevier. Over the years, his research has been funded by DARPA, NSF, and industries.
He is a senior technical editor of the Journal of Network and Systems Management (JNSM), an Associate Editor of Telecommunication Systems, and an Associate Technical Editor of IEEE Communication Magazine. He has served on the technical program committees of numerous conferences such
as International Teletraffic Congress and IEEE conferences including IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE NOMS, and IEEE IM.
